Description: The piano preludes and 'Composer Portraits' encapsulate Adler's pithy, concentrated style, while the Herrick song cycle emphasizes his lyrical gift, in a range of settings of broad emotional scope. The sonata is conventional in layout, with brisk outer movements framing a gentle slow movement. Pasiphae, inspired by a Pollock painting, is not as abstract as that might suggest, though it uses many percussion colors in its abandoned middle section, portraying a viewer's excitement at the overwhelming flood of imagery in a large abstract artwork. The concerto is a single-movement structure in two parts, a somber introduction and a fast virtuoso vehicle. As with the other works here, the musical vocabulary is primarily tonal.
