Description: Müller's last appearance in these pages was in November of 2009 (11L094) with an emotionally charged, richly romantic piano concerto and three other works of equal approachability. Here are three more: Eiger (2004) is a 15-minute "symphonic sketch" inspired by the Swiss mountain peak, not tone-painting but suggesting the forbidding and majestic aspect of the subject with abstract music. The concerto for orchestra (2007-08), an 80th birthday present for Einojuhani Rautavaara, uses Swiss folk music as sources for its melodic and rhythmic power while the double concerto (remember that Müller was a cellist) of 2009 has the sea as its inspiration, making use of vivid theatrical gestures and sensual instrumentation, with the addition in its third movement of Taiwanese and Brazilian folk songs (the home countries of its soloists). The orchestration, with reduced winds and brass compared to the other works, creates a magical combination of timbres and mixtures.
