Description: This series, having apparently killed off the cpo cycle, reaches its 3/4 point with the second recording of Spohr's late Tenth whose short length and classicizing impulse reminds us that it was composed at the same time as his last two string quartets (see elsewhere in this issue for more of his quartets) in 1857. The Eighth, after its gloomy minor-key opening feint, is also a genial, laid-back work of more standard size with its solo violin in the scherzo being just its most obvious innovation. World premiere recording of the Sturm und Drang-ish overture to Spohr's first opera of 1810. Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana; Howard Shelley.
