GEORGE ONSLOW (1784-1853): Nonet for Winds and Strings in A Minor, Op. 77, LOUIS SPOHR (1784-1859): Nonet for Winds and Strings in F, Op. 31.

Description: The first recording of these works on period instruments is designed to show how sharp, bright and often unsettling the blend of winds and strings (in works whose instrumentation was quite unusual for the period) would have been for contemporary audiences. In particular, the artists note that the demands made by Onslow in his 1849 work would have pushed the wind instruments to their very limits, making Spohr's lovely and comfortable 1813 nonet seem utterly conservative in comparison. Osmosis.
