Description: Eleven years separated Spohr's previous quartet from No. 31, completed in early 1846. Like his quatuors brillants, the solo violin has a lot to do here but, unlike them, it has to do with demanding motivic and developmental matters rather than brilliant passagework. No. 36 (his last) dates from 1857, during the years when he was suffering from depression and, along with its predecessor, represents a turning-back toward the Classical structure and proportions of Mozart and Haydn's quartets. The early (1808) Potpourri is a ten-minute fling with several Mozart opera themes. Moscow Philharmonic Concertino String Quartet.
