Description: Jadassohn came from a Jewish family in Breslau (Silesia) and studied in Leipzig under Hauptmann and Rietz and had Moscheles as a piano teacher (as well as a spell with Liszt in Weimar). Known as a pedagogue and a master of counterpoint (who left several treatises on theory), his students included Busoni, Delius, Grieg and Weingartner among others but his music until recently (Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series and Cameo Classics have each issued orchestral works) has been forgotten. The three works recorded here, dating between 1858-80, as ever show the influence of Mendelssohn in their scherzos, a melodic gift and the general musical ethos of Schumann in addition to the expected contrapuntal mastery. Syrius Trio.
