LEONARDO BALADA (b.1933): Caprichos No. 2, No. 3 "Homenaje a las Brigadas Internacionales" and No. 4 "Quasi Jazz".
Catalogue Number: 02M084
Description: Composed between 2004 and 2007, these works for chamber orchestra use traditional music, mixed in Balada's characteristic way with his earlier avant-garde techniques which he calls his "free modernistic manner". No. 2 consists of a Samba, Tango and Jarabe, No. 3 uses three Spanish folk-dances, an Irish lament and a German folk-song to honor the memories of international fighters in the Spanish Civil War and No. 4 mixes conventional classical jazz idoms, harmonies and rhythms with avant-garde harmonies and aleatoric devices. The original musical styles are always clearly heard but it is as if they are wearing modern garments; you need only be very mildly adventurous to enjoy the effect. Pittsburgh Sinfonietta; Andrés Cárdenes (violin, conductor), Lawrence Loh (conductor, No. 3).
