Description: The tight, concise, three-movement symphony (Fantasia, Pavane and Rondo) of 1937 is a work of its time: emotionally tense and somewhat gray in tone and not far in style from the music of a composer Andriessen admired, Roussel. This and the dramatic Ricercar of 1949 were offered in new radio recordings back in August of 2007 by Etcetera but the largest-work here is otherwise unavailable - the four-movement, 22-minute Mascherata. Dating from 1962, it was a commission for the 75th anniversary of the Concertgebouw Orchestra and, in its neo-classical style and representation of commedia dell'arte characters, it represents a lighter, more expansive side of the composer. The concert overture Wilhelmus van Nassouwe (1951) shows how Brahmsian Andriessen could be when the inspiration struck. Netherlands Symphony Orchestra; David Porcelijn.
