MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG (1919-1996): Symphony No. 12 "In Memoriam D. Shostakovich", The Golden Key - Ballet Suite No. 4.
Catalogue Number: 02P008
Description: The 1976 tribute to his great friend and teacher is Weinberg's longest symphony (just over 57 minutes here) and contains multiple references to Shostakovich, many more subtle than the D-S-C-H motif. Of course it sounds like Shostakovich but it also conveys the composer's agitation and grief, especially in the third movement Adagio threnody. Weinberg's handwritten materials and markings were used in preparing this recording. The ballet suite (1954-55) is in the lineage of such scores as Prokofiev's The Stone Flower and Shostakovich's The Limpid Stream. St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra; Vladimir Lande.
