Description: Here's a nice quantity of orchestral and choral music from a composer known primarily for his organ music. A whole disc (70 min.) is devoted to his symphonies and concertos; the former are in early Classical style while the double concerto has Bach-Brandenburg outer movements surrounding a more galant central one and the lute concertos follow the symphonies in style. The cantatas are short, in chorale-recit-aria or duet-recit-chorale form with orchestral accompaniment varying from severe to opulent; the longest work is the 30-minute Oratorio funèbre which is really a longer cantata. A 120-page book with tons of color and black-and-white illustrations offers two-language detailed biographies of Krebs and discussions of each work on the program. Luxury Germanic style. 4 CDs. Italian and German texts. Gesine Adler (soprano), Britta Schwarz (alto), Tobias Hunger (tenor), Tobias Berndt (bass), Stefan Maass (lute), Markus Müller (oboe), Collegium Vocale Leipzig, Mersburger Hofmusik; Michael Schönheit.
