ZDENEK FIBICH (1850-1900): Orchestral Works, Vol. 2 - Symphony No. 2 in E Flat, Op. 38, At Twilight, Op. 39, Selanka for Clarinet and Orchestra, Op. 16.
Catalogue Number: 02P059
Description: The Second (1892-93) makes use of a motto in all four movements, binding the work together more than any of Smetana's or Dvorák's compositions of any genre. This symphony is also caught up in the intense romance Fibich had with his student Anezka Schulzová which he chronicled in his massive set of Impressions and Reminiscences for piano, several of which appear throughout the work. The lusciously scored At Twilight (1893) is one of the composer's most recorded works while the very obscure Selanka (1879 and perhaps appearing for the first time on CD - it's the Czech noun for "idyll") is a short, six-minute piece in lighter mood. Irvin Venys (clarinet), Czech National Symphony Orchestra; Marek Stilec.
