SÁNDOR VERESS (1907-1992): Complete Music for String Quartet - String Quartets Nos. 1 and 2, Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 02P078
Label: Toccata Classics
Reference: TOCC 0062
Description: Written in 1931 and 1937 while he was engaged in folk-song collecting, Veress' quartets feature the folk impulse along with more modernist tendencies, especially in dissonance while the concerto dates from his mature years of statelessness in Switzerland (1961). It belongs to a genre possibly started by Martinu and it has concerto-grosso elements but much more than that in terms of formal invention. Onward momentum is the main thing here in a witty and inventive work full of both instrumental and compositional virtuosity. Basel String Quartet, Hungarian Symphony Orchestra; Jan Schultsz.
