Description: Galbraith's Febris ver is a lively celebration of spring, with the composer's familiar propulsive rhythmic drive and Coplandish melodies here sounding more akin to John Adams than usual. Engebretson's Duo contrasts driving, syncopated jazzy material with soulful melodic episodes, passing the argument back and forth between soloists - featuring colorful bending of pitches - and ensemble. Goto's Songs and Ticheli's Rest offer a gently melodic interlude in the program. The Wilson is a three-movement concerto celebrating the unique character of the clarinet, with its ability to mourn and dance, sometimes simultaneously. Beginning with a Gershwinesque flourish, the first movement contains elements of klezmer and eastern European folk melody, while the second is melancholy and introspective. The finale has the exuberant, celebratory atmosphere of a folk wedding or festival, played out against a slightly ominous backdrop. Markovski provides a tumultuous high-voltage encore, full of swagger and whistleable tunes. Drake University Wind Symphony; Robert Meunier.
