JAN VAN DER ROOST (b.1956): Sinfonia Hungarica, From Ancient Times.
Catalogue Number: 02P095
Description: We just offered a disc of music for full symphony orchestra by this Flemish composer last July (07P078) and this recording of wind band music is equally attractive, accessible and neo-romantic. The 38-minute Sinfonia (2001) uses a large battery of percussion which, along with a vivid and dynamically wide recording, will surely disturb the neighbors and upset the pets as it traces the history of Hungary through three main figures: Attila, Árpád (first Hungarian ruler) and King Stephen. The music begins with ripping barbarism and gets more civilized as we move along if not less grand. The coupling of 2008 is an 18-minute tribute to the golden age of the Franco-Flemish composers of the 15th and 16th century, strikingly updated for modern sensibilities. Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN; Jan Van der Roost.
