MARIO CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO (1895-1968): Concerto Italiano for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 31 (World Premiere Recording), Violin Concerto No. 2 "I Profeti", Op. 66
Catalogue Number: 02Q005
Description: His first violin concerto was also the young Castelnuovo-Tedesco's first major orchestral work (1924). Tuneful, fresh, transparently orchestrated, it has none of the Jewish elements which imbue his I Profeti of seven years later nor any of the latter concerto's Hollywood quality (which is there even if C-T wasn't in Hollywood yet when he wrote it). No, it's just a young composer's highly competent whack at Late Romanticism whose title belies the fact that there aren't any Italian folk melodies in it (and no Tarantella finale) - just good, solid melodic invention and a pretty exciting vivo e impetuoso finale. Tianwa Yang (violin), SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden und Freiburg; Pieter-Jelle de Boer.
