CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS (1835-1921): Symphonies, Vol. 1 - Symphonies No. 1 in E Flat, Op. 2 and No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 55, Phaëton, Op. 39
Catalogue Number: 02Q039
Description: The second-least-heard and -performed of Saint-Saëns symphonies (Urbs Roma and the A major will be coming next, I assume), the First the work of a 17-year-old full of various Germanic influences and, in fact, accepted for performance as the work of an anonymous German composer and the Second (1859) following a similar path but with lighter orchestration and moving markedly toward the Gallic fizz of Bizet's and Gounod's early symphonies in the scherzo and finale. Only budget-priced new recordings of this repertoire. Malmö Symphony Orchestra; Marc Soustrot.
