Description: Most avid collectors will have one of the two recordings of the Fourth (the recent Naxos with very slow tempi, making it last almost 48 minutes) and will know of its generally contemplative, serious mien, punctuated in the slow movement by some more violent outbursts. The Third of 1894 and the first two symphonies now show us that the Fourth's personality is not anomalous - it's just more introspective and severe than its predecessors. Mostly moderate tempos characterize this 39-minute work but, more than in either of the first two symphonies, one can hear fragmentary echoes of Dvorák (as well as Bruckner, Brahms and Mahler) which remind us of the nationality of this serious, philosophical and inward-looking composer. This music repays careful and repeated listening; the race doesn't always go to the loud and brazen. Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra; Hermann Bäumer.
