Description: In 1970, Françaix boiled Rabelais' fable down to 41 minutes of narration and music for a small string orchestra. The narration is pretty much non-stop - French speakers will enjoy this much more easily than non Francophones - but the latter can still derive pleasure from the composer's typically good-natured and witty musical personality. As is, of course, the case in the little nine-minute L'heure du Berger, here in an unusual version for strings instead of winds and in the longer Sérénade (which also appeared on a Hyperion Françaix release back in 2008). French text, English summary. La Pietà; Angèle Dubeau.
