Description: Entitled "Le Bestiaire", this 74-minute recital collects French song from the first third of the 20th century concerning animals (and a few insects). Stylistically, only Sauguet's Les Animaux, a rapid-fire response to short poems by Eluard, goes beyond late Romanticism/Impressionism. Over half the program is taken up by pianist Herscher-Clément's 38-minute cycle; this is the most conservative musically but also the most varied in approach and possibly the most enjoyable. French-English texts. Céline Ricci (soprano), Daniel Lockert (piano).
