Description: Dating from 1824 this was Meyerbeer's last opera for the Italian stage and one of a few written with an eye for a Parisian commission. Thus, it combines the lightly episodic nature and elaborate vocal ornamentation of the Italian tradition with uses of choral groups and of orchestration which looks forward to grand opera (it was also the last major opera with a role for castrato, which explains the countertenor). Previously only available on a deluxe and frighteningly expensive Opera Rara four-disc set issued in 1995, this is the sound-only version of the Dynamic DVD which we offered in January of 2008. 3 CDs. Italian libretto available on-line. Michael Maniaci (countertenor), Patrizia Ciofi (soprano), Marco Vinco (bass), Iorio Zennaro (tenor), Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro La Fenice; Emmanuel Villaume.
