Description: A jazz pianist and self-taught classical composer, Raykhelson calls himself a "neo-Romantic" but the notes perceptively point out that since Mozart was as far away from Tchaikovsky when the latter wrote his Mozartiana Suite, Raykhelson could be said to be composing in what the late Romantics called "the Old Style" when they composed their neo-baroque and neo-classical homages. Raykhelson's 2007 piano concerto is stylistically indebted to Rachmaninov although a three-minute scherzo for solo pianist sounds like a jazz improvization which certainly lets you know you're not listening to a pastiche. Prokofiev is the model for the 2010 cello concerto of rhetoric and gesture and the soloist is more a part of the orchestra than an antagonistic soloist. Boris Berezovsky (piano), Alexander Kniazev (cello), Russian State Symphony Orchestra; Hobart Earle.
