FRANCESCO GASPARINI (1661-1727): Il Bajazet.

Description: This 1719 dramma per musica is interesting on several levels: it's the second of three versions of the same libretto, its main role, unusually for the period, is for a tenor and it was sung by the same man who later sang the same character in Handel's Tamerlano of 1724, and it has several places which Handel seems to have copied almost literally into his later score. Remarkable for its continuous use of expressive dissonance, juxtaposition of very distant keys, intense choral roles in ensemble scenes and an overall atmosphere of tension, it shows why Gasparini must be considered among the most important opera composers of his time. 3 CDs. Italian-English libretto. Leonardo de Lisi (tenor), Filippo Mineccia (countertenor), Giuseppina Bridelli, Ewa Gubanska (mezzos), Auser Musici; Carlo Ipata
