Description: Scott wrote a sizeable body of songs - too many, he thought, at the prompting of his publisher. He was a natural song writer, though, with a fine sense of melody and a pianist-composer's ability to craft piano parts of great richness while complementing the voice rather than competing with it. The songs are mostly early, and do not represent his mature or most original style, but the best of them are fine examples of Romantic English song with a strong Impressionistic influence. His choice of texts was predictably those of high Romanticism and fin-de-siècle langour; Dowson was a favourite, and we also find Christina Rossetti, her brother, and a number of lesser-known names of variable quality, and several texts by the composer with suggestions of the mystical beliefs with which he became associated, all set in a chromatic idiom with considerable harmonic freedom, though always firmly tonal. Texts included. Charlotte de Rothschild (soprano), Adrian Farmer (piano).
