Description: The first quintet is from 1952 and still has folkloric references in a neo-classical style while the second (1965) comes from a period when Bacewicz was moderating avant-garde elements in her work and hinting at her earlier neo-classicism. An unusual pair of same-instrument quartets: the first (1949) was a teaching aid for her violin class at the Lodz Conservatory and is in her more typical neo-classical style, in three movements (10 minutes), both suggesting Vivaldi or Telemann but with the expressiveness of Shostakovich or Prokofiev, while the 12-minute one for cellos (1964), in its occasional similarity to the sonorism of her contemporary, Penderecki, shows Bacewicz' wide stylistic range.
