Description: The 1906 symphony shares with Sibelius’ Second and Stenhammar’s Serenade the fact of having been written in Italy, which explains its relaxed warmth and vivid colors although the finale has always sounded to me like a silent film soundtrack for a circus scene. From the folloeing year, the Rhapsody is based on two student songs (like Brahms’ Academic Overture) while the 15 minutes of music from a 1916 ballet, vivid and richly orchestrated, have become one of the most frequently performed pieces of Swedish music.
