Description: The sonata marks an important point in Wolpe's life and career; after his departure from Germany to Palestine in 1933 his music displays the influence of his middle-eastern surroundings, both Jewish and Arabic. These inflections are clearly evident in the sonata and the fragment, an abandoned first attempt at the sonata's slow movement. The Piece in Two Parts and Piece for Oboe, etc. belong to his Darmstadt-inspired period, with precise yet fragmentary textures, angular and full of contrasts. The percussion in the latter work suggests 'found sounds' (tins and glass jars) as a response to Cagean indeterminacy (which Wolpe rejected); another facet of this adventurous personality's highly individual journey through 20th century music. Heinz Holliger (oboe), Robert Aitken (flute), James Avery (piano), Peter Veale (oboe - Piece), Beverley Ellis (cello), Sven Thomas Kiebler (piano), Pascal Pons (percussion).
