MIECZYSLAW WEINBERG (1919-1996): Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 10, Symphony No. 7 in C for Harpsichord and String Orchestra, Op. 81.
Catalogue Number: 06L004
Description: The large-scale First was recently offered on the Russian Northern Flowers label as part of their "War Music" series (see 11L008 for details) but the Seventh is new to CD. Written for Rudolf Barshai and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra in 1964, its assumes neo-baroque form with five movements. The harpsichord, which opens with a sarabande-like solo, gives much of the work a certain piquancy, but is silent in the third (with Jewish intonations reminiscent of Shostakovich) and fourth movements, before returning as a solo instrument in the long (11-minute) finale which ends in a frenetic scherzo with all kinds of special instrumental effects. Erik Risberg (harpsichord), Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra; Thord Svedlund. SACD hybrid.
