Description: It's been five years since the first volume of Guarnieri's piano concertos was released. The first three concerti were very nationalistic - full of color, melody, rhythm and Brazilian folk music (although all his themes were original). These later works display a number of avant-garde features which came to the fore later in Guarnieri's career: No. 4 (1968) uses serial themes in its first movement but not in its atonal second but the energetic and lively finale recalls dance rhythms and other nationalistic traits; No. 5 (1970) is freely atonal throughout with a long, remarkably haunting slow movement "Sideral" whose ethereal and translucent sonorities recall electronic music. But No. 6, a short, 12-minute work of 1987 (first recording) returns to Guarneri's earlier, nationalist style. Max Barros (piano), Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra; Thomas Conlin.
