ANTON RUBINSTEIN (1829-1894): Theme and Variations in G, Op. 88, Akrostichon No. 2, Op. 114.
Catalogue Number: 06L064
Description: World premiere recordings of both works - the 1871 Theme and Variations is one of Romantic piano literature's largest-scale works, clocking in here at 47 minutes, a piece of epic proportions inspired by Schumann's Symphonic Etudes and containing twelve variations, the last of which is of truly symphonic scope and lasts just over ten minutes. The later (1890) Akrostichon is a 26-minute cycle of salon-style pieces which display Rubinstein's gift for long, lyrical lines. Joseph Banowetz (piano).
