Description: Castillon's chronic ill-health and the fact that he had a military career, abandoned because of sickness in 1871, meant that he had little time to compose. He was a pianist by training and some collectors may have the 1970s EMI recording of his piano concerto; this 65-minute collection selects from longer cycles and suites (as Martin did above with his Alkan recital) and the music all dates from the last five years of the composer's life. Schumann seems to have been his main model, perhaps Brahms as well, but we'll never know what Castillon might have developed into had he lived longer. Laurent Martin (piano). 2005 release.
