Description: It's a real pity that such a scorching discovery as Mokranjac's sonata needs to share space with yet more recordings of the Martinu and Enesco pieces. This Serbian composer's sonata, from 1956, is a late Romantic/Expressionist cry of despair. Dark, tormented, shot through (especially in its scherzo and toccata-like finale) with references to Serbian folk dances - the hotblooded, alcohol-soaked kind where the musicians are also all carrying knives (which they know how to use) - and coming off like the harrowing confession of a wounded soul (the composer committed suicide), this is a violin sonata you won't soon forget. Lorenzo Gatto (violin), Milos Popovic (piano).
