Description: The presence of the accordion - an instrument that Yun enjoyed for its polyphonic capabilities and capacity for rapid modulation of sound - is the linking thread between the pieces on this disc, but equally important is the lyrical vein common to the composer's ensemble pieces after his early absorption into the western avant garde. The 1976 Duo (with the accordion part transcribed from the piano original) features the intriguing device of establishing one instrument as 'background' against which material for the other unfolds. The Concertino treats all 5 instruments as equal partners in an unfolding series of dialogues and discussions, at times leading to quite complex textures, though always with a sense of melodic line. The other two pieces both date from 1988, by which time the cantabile character of solo lines had become paramount in Yun's music. The cello's rich melodic song in Intermezzo is complemented by a sumptuous, slow-moving progression of harmonies for the accordion, melancholy and moving. The Pezzo Fantastico progresses from a tender lyrical opening toward a kind of ecstatic excitement in agitated trills (for which the accordion is ideally suited) in an advanced but accessible harmonic idiom in which a strong underlying vein of tonality is clearly apparent. Stefan Hussong (accordion), Minguet Quartet, Julius Berger (cello).
