Description: The famous German-domiciled Lithuanian cellist does a solid for his native land with this chronological recital - the first disc contains pre-war Lithuanian music, and the second disc contains Lithuanian music from just after the war until the start of the 1980s. The largest scale work is the 1927 sonata by Banaitis, a 34-minute piece which uses folk material in all three movements. The only other folk flavor appears in the Dvarionas Pezzo while the remaining pre-war pieces are inspired by the romantic St. Petersburg Conservatory faculty of Rimsky and Lyadov where most Lithuanian composers studied. The Soviet-period music remains tonal, of course, with Kutavičius and Latėnas delving into minimalism and popular music flavors. Each of the pianists here is the offspring of a famous composer and their fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers are listed in the extensive and informative notes. 2 CDs. David Geringas (cello), Indrė Baikštytė, Justas Dvarionas, Petras Geniušas, Jurgis Karnavičius, Birutė Vainiūnaitė, Rokas Zubovas (piano).
