SIGFRID KARG-ELERT (1877-1933): 25 Caprices and Sonata for Solo Saxophone.
Catalogue Number: 07K069

Description: We don't know which is more remarkable, that Karg-Elert wrote an hour-long set of Caprices, tacking on a sonata of 15 minutes afterwards, for saxophone in 1929 (when practically no one in Germany of his generation acknowledged the existence of the instrument), or that he did it entirely on his own. No dedication, no sax-playing virtuoso dedicatee - just because he was interested in the instrument! Far more than teaching exercises (as Karg-Elert misleadingly intimates in the score), this is musical, attractive material that can easily be listened to end-to-end, especially since the soloist uses all four saxophone registers to vary the tone. Christian Peters (saxes).
