Description: Milford taps into that distinctly English vein of pastoral melancholy which runs through the works of his friends Finzi and Vaughan Williams but, after personal tragedy and increasing psychological troubles (ending in suicide), his work became much darker. The nine Swan Songs of 1948-51 are examples of this period while the earlier songs are all in a more lyrical and gentle mood and the 33 minutes of piano pieces range from Reputation Square - a setting of early 19th century hornpipes - to the Prelude, Air and Finale whose mordent seems to be the one which begins Bach's famous Toccata in D Minor. Texts included. Phillida Bannister (contralto), Raphael Terroni (piano).
