HEITOR VILLA LOBOS (1887-1959): Forest of the Amazon.
Catalogue Number: 07M004
Description: One of Villa-Lobos' most spectacular compositions gets its second modern recording, this time in SACD sound with all-Brazilian forces (except the Hungarian soprano). The sweeping 78-minute suite is a 1958 refashioning of a score Villa-Lobos had written for the film "Green Mansions" - without knowing that one fits music to the film and not the other way around (Bronislau Kaper took a few of V-L's themes and made an entirely new score from them)! Evocations of primitive Indian rituals (with chorus singing nonsense syllables) and four songs for soprano in the vein of Brazilian popular music are embedded within a richly orchestrated tapestry of sheer sonic splendor. This is likely to be the recording against which to measure Forest of the Amazon for some time. Portuguese-English texts. Anna Korondi (soprano), Male Voices of the São Paolo Symphony Choir, São Paolo Symphony Orchestra; John Neschling. SACD hybrid
