ANTON BRUCKNER (1824-1896): Symphony No. 4 in E Flat, "Romantic" (1888 version).
Catalogue Number: 07M062
Description: I'm not a Bruckner maniac but I know that the vast majority of recordings of the Fourth are of the 1878-80 version and that this 1888 version is Bruckner's absolute last word on this symphony. Condemned by 20th century scholars like Deryck Cooke as a falsification of Bruckner's intentions which "should be rejected altogether", it is now realized, according to evidence not available in the 1930s when Robert Haas was aggressively rejecting it and excluding it from his edition (as did Leopold Nowak later), that Bruckner carefully revised the 1878-80 version in 1887 and 1888, oversaw its performance a year later and its 1890 publication. The notes are by Benjamin Korstvedt, who edited it for the International Bruckner Gesellschaft. Minnesota Orchestra; Osmo Vänskä. BIS SACD hybrid
