Description: Offered solely for the 18-year-old Balakirev's octet, only the first movement of which survives. Still, it's over 13 minutes long and proves to be a miniature piano concerto with beautiful lyrical themes primarily in the instruments while the pianist provides virtuoso runs and Chopinesque flourishes; the second subject is pure Russian melancholy in the manner of Borodin.
