Catalogue Number: 07M070
Description: This is actually an important release since it contains a genre very rare in French romantic music - a song-cycle. Dating from 1902, Chansons de mer is a 14-song cycle to texts by Paul Bourget in which the ebb and flow and ever-changing character of the sea are compared to the moods of human life. This was Widor's second song cycle; his first, Soird d'été of 1889 was the first since Berlioz' Nuits d'été. The music is passionate, amorous, desperate and stoical by turns and is a must-have for all collectors of the French mélodie. Texts available on-line. Michael Bundy (baritone), Jeremy Filsell (piano).
