Description: Koechlin's 1915 viola sonata is one of his most impressive works of any kind, a response to the desolation and carnage in France during the First World War - dramatic and tormented with two slow movements which are calm but haunted, a bitter scherzo and a somber and plaintive finale. Written at various times between 1900 and 1940, Jongen's short (between five and ten minutes each) viola pieces tend toward melancholy, poignancy and pensive reflectiveness, even in the second episode of the otherwise outgoing Allegro appassionato. Roger Benedict (viola), Timothy Young (piano).
