Description: Born in Kharkov, student of Balakirev, Lyapunov and Rimsky-Korsakov and first teacher of Stravinsky (!), Akimenko emigrated in 1923 first to Prague and then to Nice and finally Paris where he spent the rest of his life. All the works here except the 1925 Mélodie are from his Russian, pre-Revolutionary days and blend the exuberance of his Slavic heritage with the discretion of French neo-classicism, including some touches of Impressionistic harmonies in both the sonatas (1907 and 1911) as well as the high-quality drawing-room short pieces of c. 1909 and “before 1912”. Tatiana Chulochnikova (violin), Anastasia Dedik (piano).
