Description: In recent years, Turnage's music has taken a significant turn away from the confrontational, aggressive, even violent, jazz-laced scores of his earlier years, though the constant sense of restless energy and the basically tonal vocabulary remain. The idea of this 23-minute double concerto from 2017 came from a video piece by artist Mark Wallingford, in which the artist's shadow was filmed interacting with objects and other shadows in public places in London. Turnage makes much of imitative gestures, from canons to finishing one another's phrases, between the two soloists, as interchangeable object and shadow, in a four-movement fast-slow-fast-slow, expressive neo-romantic concerto. Knowing the ensemble for which he was writing, Turnage included some exotic colour in the orchestration, with a number of Turkish percussion instruments. Vadim Repin, Daniel Hope (violins), Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra; Sascha Goetzel.
