Description: Écritures consists of a cycle of three independent movements based on the same musical material. Anabasis is constructed of canons, with the material interwoven and altered to produce very complex textures. Timbrally, too, Nielson's music is complex, using whispering, fleeting or percussive sounds, and often dividing a line between an array of different instruments one note at a time. of Flesh and Stone is a kind of diabolical scherzo, hectically flinging notes, clusters, groans and harsh percussive punctuation around in a evocation of Dante's second circle of hell. Go (...go...go) addresses the relationship of timbre to thematic material on many levels, building an abstract collage of fragments of instrumental sound. St Francis is a chamber violin concerto, built of a variety of instrumental dialogues in pitched, unpitched and ambiguously pitched (like birdsong) sounds, endlessly active, questioning the meaning of communication - between a saint and the animal world, or between musicians and audience, perhaps., J Freivogel (violin), The Twittering Machine; Timothy Weiss.
