Description: In May of last year (05P011) we found Coke’s 1940-42 violin sonata “intense, passionate sonata ... which rides a propulsive undercurrent of energy throughout”. Well, there’s a lot more of the same here in the 24 Preludes (intended as a set but published separately in 1939 and 1941) and the Variations of the former year. If you like Rachmaninov and Medtner, you’re going to like this - the big Romantic gestures, heroic manner and flamboyant display but with more modern, dense harmonies. One can imagine what his six piano concertos (!) and three symphonies must have sounded like (most are lost). Simon Callaghan (piano).
