Description: The latest release in this invaluable series brings us a broadcast, scheduled for national transmission at 11:30pm on New Year’s Eve 1939 of the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth (this is all that was performed and broadcasted), a tradition that began in 1918 and is covered in the excellent notes in the 44-page book in German and English and full of period photographs. The Eighth dates from the last months of the Reich and was transmitted from banquet hall of the Concordia brewery in a Leipzig suburb, the temporary home of the bombed-out orchestra. Cerha’s 12-minute piece should be approachable enough even for the historical recording buyers of this disc. Also included is the 50-second broadcast from Frankfurt Radio in 1939, following the Beethoven, of the ringing at midnight of the St. Peter’s bell in Cologne Cathedral, the largest freely-swinging church bell in the world (which rang again for the reunification of Germany in 1990).
