ROBERT WARD (b.1917): Roman Fever.
Catalogue Number: 09K079
Description: A lyrical, one-hour opera based on a short story by Edith Wharton about two 40-year-old widows who meet again, having known each other 20 years previously in Rome. The music, as you would expect from Ward, is quite conservative and contains several beautiful tunes. Ward purposely wrote for four female singers (the other two are the main characters' daughters) since having been advised by a friend that, while conservatories are chock full of excellent female singers these days, stage works are never chock-full of roles for women. This is a 2002 South Carolina PBS production. Marilyn Taylor, Tanya Currier (sopranos), Carrie Brown, Christina Thompson Howell (mezzos), Richard Conant (baritone), Orchestra; Donald Portnoy.
