Description: Along with the well-known "Voice of the Whale", we have a rarity: the 1962 5 Pieces, the last work Crumb wrote before beginning what he felt to be his mature style. Plenty of playing inside the piano and ingenious use of the pedals (it's said that Stockhausen visited the University of Colorado the month after Crumb had written them and was fascinated by them) produced novel timbral effects. Echoes, often strikingly quiet, prefigures Echoes of Time and the River and Dream Sequence (1976) refers in its subtitle to the famous 1970 Black Angels, which was Images I; this is like the angelic, serene negative to the nightmarish intensity of Angels. Jamie Van Eyck (mezzo), The International Contemporary Ensemble.
