Description: The piano concerto generates its musical effects and meaning from the extreme preparation of the solo instrument, producing an acoustical analogy to swarms of particles, often reflected in similar extended-technique noise textures in the orchestra. The sound of the piano is continuously manipulated in real time, producing the effect of different instruments morphing into one another, the whole suggesting various analogies from the world of molecular and subatomic physics. The earlier Violin Concerto drives its effects from acoustic and spectral analysis, with a constantly active solo line moving in and out of focus within a complex web of highly dissonant, clustered orchestral texture as a timbrally differentiated thread which nevertheless remains part of the sonorous fabric of the music, never appearing in a conventional concertante role. Movimentos uses a symmetrical arrangement of soloists and instrumental groups in a busy kaleidoscope of spatial hocketing effects. Unlike the other two works here the music has a pronounced rhythmic pulse involving repeated cells in almost minimalistic configurations, the harmonic material derived from spectral analysis, resynthesized instrumentally without electronic means. Alberto Rosado (piano), Ernst Kovacic (violin), Juan Carlos Garvayo (piano 2), Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin; Johannes Kalitzke.
