Description: We've had previous works by Szeligowski on both this Polish label and on Naxos, so his 1956 neo-classical trio will remind us of the early, French inspired works (the composer spent 1929-31 in Paris) we heard there. Yet this effusion of bright and brittle neo-classicism was, in fact, the beginning of an escape from the "socialist realism" demanded by the Polish Communist government in the years after the Second World War. The majority of Koszewski's works are choral but, before he turned in that direction, he wrote this lovely, melodic, neo-Romantic trio in 1950 which may make you think at times of Brahms, but really, the influences are from Polish late Romantic composers, many of whom are still barely (if at all) served on disc. Panufnik's 17-minute trio (the second recording of it in ten months) is the work of a 20-year-old, utterly tonal yet not post-Romantic and easy to enjoy. Poznan Piano Trio.
