Description: This Liechtensteiner composer on disc has been predominantly known by his sacred and secular choral music and by his organ sonatas but, as is evident by the size of this set, he wrote more for the piano than for the organ. Grounded in the Viennese Classical school and the Romanticism from Beethoven to Chopin (but with hints of Brahms and even Liszt), Rheinberger also shows plenty of the polyphony one finds in his organ works and generally eschews mindless glitter and virtuosity for virtuosity's sake (but a lot of this music isn't easy to play). Very little here is otherwise available on disc, making this a big piece of musical land for explorers of Romantic repertoire. 10 CDs. Jürg Hanselmann (piano), Sandra Hanselmann-Kästli (duos). Original 1990, 1993 and 1999--2004 Prezioso releases.
